Yesterday only, I was invited by a friend for dinner. One very eminent personality, Padmashree awardee and expert in the defense domain was also invited. That was great evening as I just love healthy chats with tasty food. And I'm very much interested in interaction with different people. It is the best teacher I suppose.
The common thread I observed in him, just like other luminaries, is the broad spectrum of their interests. In popular parlance, it is said that if you want to excel in something , you have to sacrifice everything else and focus on the particular field only. But my observation tells me altogether different story. The person supposedly best in defense studies, was talking so passionately about Hindustani Classical Music and sharing his experiences of playing Santoor. During my college days, I had privilege to meet and interact with many veterans. I remember meeting Late Shri Mangesh Padgaonkar,an iconic Marathi poet and writer. He had huge interest and knowledge of paintings and music along with his field of writing. One of the great thinkers, Karl Marx has many romantic poems on his name. Einstein was keenly interested in hiking and cycling.
Thus I believe that such diversity makes you mature and comprehensive. In fact different branches of knowledge are just for convenience of human being. In reality, knowledge is a complete whole in itself. Thus instead of getting stuck to a single domain, one must go on exploring the huge cosmos of knowledge. It is said that a chair or a table with single leg can't remain stable. Similarly for sustainable growth, human beings too should have diversified interests.
