" Remember Red, hope is a good thing, probably the best of things", says Andy in 'The Shawshank Redemption'. This is one of my favorite dialogues. If you have to name a single thing in economy that is always in short supply, it is hope.
We all live on a hope. It is not necessarily optimistic. You may hope to fail in the exam. But there is a hope in that negativity as well. Not lotions or cosmetics or powder or chemicals or schemes. What marketers sell is hope !
Hope makes everything feel better, look better and it gives everyone a dreamy picture of tomorrow. It makes every day better, every project work better. It even increases the productivity and efficiency. It cures cynicism as well. Hope is like an anchor for everyone to live.
Hopelessness is worse than death. Thus I honestly see the art of 'managing hope' of masses as a solution to many of the problems. Recently some universities are thinking of offering MBA in 'Hopes Management' area. Even government need to factor in this 'h-factor' in policy making. And that hope be tangible enough.
Many a times hope is like a placebos. But placebos do work. One of the surveys found that 50% of acupuncture treatments for back pains were done in wrong fashion. But still patients treated correctly and wrongly felt it in similar ways. Placebo it is ! Hope for better, relaxed tomorrow it is !
But this should not be perceived negatively. Giving placebo, hope to someone is not lying or playing with someone's emotions. Rather it is creatively managing the emotions. And the placebos are always such that they will either help positively or will be neutral, but will never harm. Same is the case for hope.
So I see only hope as the hope for better future.
